Social Security Application

Applying for a Social Security Number for J-1 visa-holders

To receive wages in the US, you must apply for a Social Security number. The is the federal authority which issues the official card with a Social Security number. The government uses the number to keep track of your earnings and tax liability. To apply, you need the following:

  • Social Security Application Form (print most recent version from )
  • Original passport with current visa, I-94 printout, and Form DS-2019
  • Letter verifying employment (professors and scholars should use the detailed offer letter provided by Dickinson prior to arrival in the United States)
  • Letter verifying authorization to work provided by the International Student and Scholar Services office

Appointments are required by the Carlisle Social Security Office for the application process. Please call at 1-866-635-0507. All applications are processed in person at the office on 17013but you must make an appointment first. Office Hours: Monday - Friday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM   Saturdays, Sundays and Federal Holidays: Closed

As soon as you receive your Social Security card with your Social Security Number (SSN), please upload a PDF of your Social Security card and your °µÍø½ûÇø ID to the Registrar's Office using this . Please be aware that your Social Security number is a gateway to your identity and should be secured. Identity theft is a serious problem and can create financial problems for you in the future. Take precautions to protect your personal information. There are very few occasions when you will need to present your actual Social Security card. Do NOT carry your Social Security Card in your wallet! Keep your card in a safe place as you do your passport.
