Course Advising, Tutoring, QR, and Writing Support

ADVISING

Every student at Dickinson has an Advisor to assist with academic decision-making. But students can also seek assistance from the Student Success and Academic Advising office, including connecting with a Peer Advisor).

TUTORING

With the approval of a student's professor, it may be possible to request a peer tutor to assist with a class in which a student may be struggling. To learn more, visit the Peer Tutoring Program page.

WRITING SUPPORT

Dickinson students have the fortune of not only being able to get support with any type of writing assignments in English, they can also receive foreign language writing tutoring -- both through the Multilingual Writing Center, located to the right of the circulation desk in the library. You can also access a wealth of Resources for Writers -- from professors' guidance, to citation help, to PowerPoint presentations and entertaining podcasts that offer support for all aspects of writing.

Tend to have trouble getting started? They can help!
The Writing Center is not only for proofreading -- in fact, one of the best ways to use the Writing Center is to go with a prompt and your related ideas and then discuss with a Writing Associate whether you're on the right track and how best to tackle that writing assignment. You can then return once you've made some progress on the assignment to get additional feedback.

Got a long research assignment? Plan your steps!
Although there is no "one right way" to write, and the writing process is not always linear, another helpful online tool to assist writers is an Assignment Calculator which breaks down a writing assignment into manageable steps with due dates for each. There are many available online. This sample was created by Rochester Institute of Technology (and provided here with their permission).  Enter the class and due date of your assignment. Just skip where it asks you to enter your "RIT Username and Password." Note that this website contains links that will direct users to RIT-related resources, which may not be accessible to non-RIT students. But you can use this as a starting point for calculating all the steps involved in long-term assignments with proposed deadlines for each of those steps.

Want help with planning your steps? Schedule an appointment with the Writing Center, or call them at (717) 245-1620.

MATH & SCIENCE SUPPORT

The Quantitative Reasoning Center is also located ito the right of the circulation desk in the libary (across from the Multilingual Writing Center). The QR Center supports students in any course with quantitative content—whether in mathematics, science, social science, or the humanities. ("Quantitative" refers to things you can measure or quantify.)  QR tutors and Quantitative Reasoning Associates (QRAs) have been recommended by faculty and trained in helping students learn how to learn. If you could use support with math, statistics, graphing, using excel, reasoning through problems, or data visualization, there's a tutor for you. Click the link above to learn more, and C$ yourself!
