Bio

Greg has always enjoyed a diverse yet extensive musical background as a trombonist, pianist, composer, and music theorist, winning numerous accolades in all these areas. At Dickinson, Greg teaches applied lessons, music theory classes, directs the Dickinson Improvisation and Collaboration Ensemble (DICE), and performs with the faculty brass quintet and jazz ensemble. As a trombonist, Greg is active as a recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician. Equally at home as both a classical and jazz musician, he has performed professionally as a trombonist with many musical organizations, including the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass, Symphony in C, the Wilmington Ballet Orchestra, River City Big Band, Quartet die Posaunen, the Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra, and the Pottstown Symphony. As an orchestral musician, Greg has performed under the batons of Rossen Milanov, Cristian Macelaru, and Charles Dutoit. His primary teachers include Matthew Vaughn and Glenn Dodson of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and James Erdman of the United States Marine Band and has also been fortunate enough over his years of study to have been coached by Nitzan Haroz, Blair Bollinger, Vern Kagarice, David Bilger, Charles Abramovic, Lambert Orkis, Rodney Marsalis, Warren Deck, and Jose Sibaja. In 2007 and 2008 Greg was selected as a finalist in the International Trombone Association’s Larry Wiehe and Marstellar Competitions. As a pianist, Greg is active as a recitalist, accompanist, and chamber musician and is comfortable in both classical and jazz idioms. Over the years, Greg has performed as a soloist and collaborative pianist in masterclasses for Petronel Malan, Anthony Plog, Warren Deck, Weston Sprott, and Santiago Rodriguez and has been coached by Michelle Rosen, David Bilger, Peter Smith, and Jeffrey Curnow. In 2003 he appeared on national public radio’s showcase for young classical musicians, “From the Top." As a collaborative pianist, Greg has worked with a diverse range of vocalists and instrumentalists—including Adam Luftman, Matthew Vaughn, James Erdman, Beverly Butts, Adam Klein, Tami Swartz, Jennifer Check, Margaret Lattimore, Garrett Sorenson, and Eric Owens. Greg maintains an active area of research in the psychoacoustic foundations of music theory and frequently lectures and presents on this topic.
